Senior Machine Setter

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Machine Setter to join a well‑established manufacturing operation in Maitland, Cape Town. The role focuses on delivering first‑time‑right setups, maintaining stable production, and supporting continuous‑improvement initiatives within a high‑volume, precision‑machining environment.

Key responsibilities

• Set up, programme (where applicable) and troubleshoot specialised gear‑cutting machinery and second‑operations equipment.
• Prepare machines for production, ensuring accurate first‑time‑right setups.
• Verify production layouts, machine documentation and engineering specifications before starting runs.
• Conduct first‑off inspections, manage IMDS requirements and use gauges to meet quality specifications.
• Monitor machine behaviour under load, diagnose mechanical issues and minimise downtime and scrap.
• Mentor operators and contribute to continuous‑improvement projects.

Required profile

• Grade 12 qualification (essential).
• Red Seal Toolmaker qualification.
• Minimum 5 years experience in toolmaking or precision machining, preferably in a high‑volume environment.
• Immediate or short‑notice availability.
• Fluent in English and Afrikaans.
• Valid South African driver’s licence (advantageous).

Required skills

• Gear cutting machinery operation and setup.
• Milling machines, presses, hydraulic and pneumatic tooling.
• Machine programming (where applicable).
• Interpretation of technical drawings, layouts and engineering documentation.
• First‑off inspections, IMDS compliance, gauge measurement and quality specification adherence.
• Process capability analysis, setup optimisation, continuous improvement and scrap reduction.
