Senior Logistics Engineer

About the role

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is seeking a Senior Logistics Engineer to lead product‑development logistics engineering for the SKA‑Mid and MeerKAT telescopes. The role focuses on designing supportable systems, delivering operational support baselines and influencing system architecture to meet availability targets.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement Physical Breakdown Structures (PBS) and conduct Physical Configuration Audits (PCA) to ensure data‑pack integrity.
• Execute Logistics Support Analysis (LSA), develop Operational Support Baselines (OsBL) and lead Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
• Identify, document and analyse preventive and corrective maintenance tasks, resources and procedures.
• Lead verification and validation of system supportability, produce logistic engineering plans (LEMP) and ILS compliance statements.
• Mentor engineers, transfer ILS knowledge and drive continuous improvement of logistic engineering processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering with 5–13+ years of relevant product‑development experience, depending on qualification level.
• Proven experience in advanced logistic and systems engineering across the full product lifecycle, including use of CMS and CCMS tools.

Required skills

• Physical Breakdown Structures (PBS) and Physical Configuration Audits (PCA).
• Configuration Management Systems (e.g., ALIM).
• Logistics Support Analysis (LSA) and Ramlog IME database.
• Reliability Estimation and Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
• Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (e.g., RamLog).
• Knowledge of standards: ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, MIL‑STD 1388‑1A/2B, DEFSTAN 00‑60, MIL‑STD 1629A, S1000D/S3000D, ISO 9001.
