Senior Legal Counsel

About the role

ENGIE is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to provide expert legal support for energy projects in South Africa. The role involves advising on M&A, project financing, and both greenfield and brownfield developments across the energy generation and power transmission value chain.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on energy projects, including M&A, financing, and development phases.
• Conduct legal due diligence, risk assessments, and prepare legal risk memos.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts such as JV, EPC, O&M, financing, and real estate agreements.
• Support project financing documentation and security creation.
• Advise on regulatory, contractual, corporate governance, and BBBEE matters.
• Monitor legal and regulatory developments in the energy and construction sectors.
• Manage external counsel to ensure quality and cost‑efficiency.
• Supervise trainees and ensure compliance with ENGIE policies and ethical standards.

Required profile

• Qualified attorney with substantial experience in energy‑sector legal matters.
• Proven track record in M&A, project finance, and contract negotiation.
• Familiarity with South African law, corporate governance, and BBBEE regulations.
• Ability to lead due‑diligence processes and manage external legal teams.
