Senior Legal Counsel – Global Markets

About the role

The Global Markets Legal team is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to provide expert legal advice and risk management for Global Markets transactions across South Africa and, where required, other African jurisdictions. You will be a key point of contact for the business, delivering proactive guidance on complex derivative and structured product deals.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on Global Markets transactions and regulatory matters.
• Draft, review, and negotiate complex agreements, including OTC derivative contracts, ISDA (and CSA), GMRA, and other master agreements.
• Prepare confirmations, confidentiality agreements, clearing agreements, and ad‑hoc legal documents.
• Support the business with transaction structuring, external counsel briefing, and legislative opinions.
• Manage relationships with internal stakeholders and external counsel, ensuring cost‑effective legal services.
• Monitor local and international legal developments affecting Global Markets and report insights.
• Contribute to team strategy, project planning, and mentorship of junior staff.

Required profile

• Strong relationship‑management skills with internal clients and external partners.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to supervise others when needed.
• Excellent analytical abilities and creative problem‑solving.
• Commercially minded with a focus on cost control and value addition.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of ISDA, CSA, GMRA and other derivatives master agreements.
• Experience drafting and negotiating complex financial contracts.
• Understanding of South African and broader African financial regulations.
