Senior Energy Design Engineer

About the role

Arup is seeking a Senior Energy Design Engineer to join its multidisciplinary Energy team in Johannesburg or Cape Town. The role focuses on delivering renewable energy projects that support South Africa’s decarbonisation agenda, covering solar PV, wind, battery storage, green hydrogen and mini‑/micro‑grid solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead internal project teams and manage the delivery of large‑scale renewable energy projects.
• Develop feasibility studies, concept designs, technical specifications and tender documentation.
• Coordinate grid‑connection studies and liaise with utilities, regulators and other stakeholders.
• Drive business development activities, client engagement and proposal preparation.
• Apply financial acumen to assess project finance structures and investment models.

Required profile

• B.Eng or BSc in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a renewable‑energy qualification.
• Professional registration with ECSA.
• Demonstrated experience in renewable energy and decarbonisation projects.
• Strong project management and client‑facing skills.
