Senior Commercial Associate – Corporate Law

About the role

Shepstone And Wylie Attorneys is seeking a senior commercial associate to strengthen its Commercial Department in Durban. The role involves providing high‑level legal advice and support across a broad portfolio of corporate and commercial matters.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and review commercial contracts, including M&A, sale of businesses, share transactions, leases, finance agreements and industry‑specific indemnities.
• Assist clients with contract negotiations and provide comprehensive legal opinions.
• Conduct legal research, due diligence, and compile detailed reports.
• Prepare legal correspondence, director/shareholder resolutions, trust deeds and privacy/POPIA policies.
• Develop commercial agreement templates and support business development initiatives.
• Perform company secretarial duties and, where relevant, advise on the Competition Act and merger applications.

Required profile

• LLB degree or equivalent qualification.
• Admission as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Minimum of 5 years post‑admission experience in commercial law.
• Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple matters under tight deadlines.
• Strong client relationship management and business development capabilities.

Required skills

• Extensive experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements.
• In‑depth knowledge of commercial and corporate law principles.
• Excellent analytical, drafting, negotiation and communication skills.
