Senior Clinical Data Scientist - R Shiny

About the role

ICON Strategic Solutions is hiring a Senior Clinical Data Scientist in Johannesburg, working in a sponsor-dedicated model supported by ICON's global expertise. The role analyses clinical trial data and supports the statistical analysis process, turning complex clinical and real-world data into applications and analytical solutions that help answer clinical questions and support evidence-based decisions. You will work alongside statisticians, data managers, programmers and clinical colleagues.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop R Shiny applications, dashboards and visualisations for clinical study monitoring, data review, safety analysis and evidence generation.
• Use R and advanced statistical techniques to turn clinical and real-world datasets into accessible insights.
• Build scalable, modular and well-documented solutions and continuously improve their performance, usability and user experience.
• Partner with cross-functional colleagues so solutions follow CDISC standards, regulatory requirements and internal quality standards.
• Share expertise in R and R Shiny, contribute to best practices and automation, and support colleagues' development.

Required profile

• Around 5+ years of experience in statistical programming, clinical data analysis, Real World Evidence/HTA, Medical Affairs or evidence generation, ideally in a pharma, biotech or CRO environment.
• Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Life Sciences or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Experience with clinical or healthcare data.
• Legal right to work in the country where the role is based.

Required skills

• Strong hands-on experience with R and R Shiny, including application development, dashboards and visualisation (e.g. ggplot2 or Plotly).
• Knowledge of the R ecosystem, including R packages, Git, CRAN and data wrangling.
• Knowledge of CDISC standards such as SDTM and ADaM, TLFs, or Phase IIIb/IV trials is particularly valuable.
• Knowledge of Python, SAS, cloud technologies, Posit Connect/Shiny Server or Real World Data is welcome but not essential.
