Responsible Pharmacist

About the role

The Responsible Pharmacist will ensure that the pharmacy business operates in full compliance with South African pharmacy legislation and internal procedures. This senior role involves direct supervision of pharmacy activities, corrective actions on inspection findings, and liaison with regulatory bodies.

Key responsibilities

• Manage business compliance with the Pharmacy Act 53 of 1974 and the Medicines and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965.
• Supervise daily pharmacy operations and ensure they are conducted under personal oversight.
• Address deficiencies identified in Pharmacy Council or SAHPRA inspection reports.
• Maintain current registrations, recordings, and licences (DOH, SAPC, SAHPRA, ISO).
• Respond to audit reports from SAPC, SAHPRA and the Department of Health.
• Oversee all pharmacists appointed by the pharmacy owner.
• Report any non‑compliance in writing to management and provide copies to the Pharmacy Council.

Required profile

• Minimum tertiary qualification (B.Pharm or B.Sc. Pharm).
• Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council.
• At least 5 years of experience in a similar pharmacy compliance or operational role.
• Working knowledge of the Pharmacy Act and Medicines and Related Substances Control Acts.
• Familiarity with Good Wholesale/Distribution Practices in South Africa.
• Eligibility to work in South Africa.
