Research Nurse

About the role

The University of Cape Town Lung Institute seeks a dedicated Research Nurse to support clinical research studies focused on infectious diseases. You will provide direct participant care, perform clinical procedures, and ensure accurate documentation within a purpose‑driven research environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with participant recruitment, enrolment, informed consent and randomisation.
• Coordinate study activities, ensuring compliance with approved protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements.
• Maintain accurate participant records, case report forms and study data collection tools.
• Oversee specimen collection, laboratory sample transport and results management.
• Liaise with project teams, sponsors and stakeholders regarding study progress.
• Support orientation of new research personnel and manage investigational product handling.
• Screen participants against inclusion/exclusion criteria and uphold confidentiality.

Required profile

• Nursing Diploma or Degree with current registration as a Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
• 2‑5 years post‑registration nursing experience.
• Fluency in English and Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa.
• Strong organisational, time‑management and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary research team.

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet applications).
• Current Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
• Experience with data management systems.
