Research Nurse – Clinical Trials (12‑month Fixed‑Term)

About the role

The Research Nurse will perform clinical procedures on research participants in line with protocol requirements and Good Clinical Practice. This 12‑month fixed‑term role supports the Emavundleni Clinical Research Site in delivering high‑quality HIV and related infection studies.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct clinical observations and procedures such as blood draws, vital signs, infusions, injections, and, if certified, IUCD or Implanon insertions.
• Assist medical officers and study coordinators with protocol‑specific tasks and ensure proper sample handling and cold‑chain maintenance.
• Manage participant flow through screening, consenting, enrolment, follow‑up visits and home visits when required.
• Provide basic medical advice, triage adverse events, and coordinate referrals to appropriate agencies.
• Maintain clinical area cleanliness, manage medical waste, and ensure equipment is functional.
• Support study administration by filing results, transcribing data into case report forms, and updating study coordinators on daily clinic progress.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Nursing with registration as a Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• 2–3 years of nursing experience, preferably in clinical research.
• Valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
• Strong interpersonal, planning and organisational abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure, maintain confidentiality and collaborate with diverse teams.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends.

Required skills

• Computer literacy with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook Express.
• GCP certification.
