Relief Donor Care Officer

About the role

South African National Blood Service is seeking a Relief Donor Care Officer to work in the blood collection department in Pretoria. The role is on a full‑time basis and the incumbent will provide coverage across the zone on short notice, ensuring donor eligibility and safe collection of blood components.

Key responsibilities

• Assess donor suitability according to established protocols and perform whole blood, autologous/designate, double red cell and apheresis platelet collections.
• Achieve collection targets while adhering to Standard Operating Procedures and quality‑risk compliance.
• Support clinic staff on an ad‑hoc basis to maintain teamwork, professional service delivery and positive customer relations.
• Manage operational and financial objectives as directed.

Required profile

• Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) with current registration on the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Minimum two years of nursing experience, preferably in blood collection or related clinical settings.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR certification, with renewal as required.
• Valid code 8 or 10 driver’s licence and willingness to operate a company vehicle when needed.
• Ability to work overtime, weekends and variable hours, and to stand for long periods, lift up to 14 kg and assist with loading vehicles.
