Quality Controller – Poultry Processing

About the role

Astral, a leading integrated poultry producer in South Africa, is seeking a Quality Controller for its processing plant in Fisantekraal. The role ensures that all products meet food safety and quality standards while supporting continuous improvement across the facility.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining HACCP and FSSC 22000 programmes and apply corrective actions when required.
• Monitor staff personal hygiene and enforce hygiene standards throughout the plant.
• Oversee product flow, temperature control, chlorine measurements, and water/brine checks.
• Conduct quality checks on final products, including weight verification, sealing, printing, and traceability.
• Manage foreign‑object controls and ensure accurate scale readings.
• Monitor animal welfare practices on the slaughter line.
• Collect lab samples, report variances or non‑conformances to Production and Quality Assurance managers.
• Maintain the 20‑keys system and support documentation for GMP and quality management systems.

Required profile

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage a team.
• Fluent in English and a second official language.
• Excellent communication at all organisational levels.
• Ability to work under high pressure and in shift patterns, including weekends and public holidays.
• Proactive, with solid administrative, problem‑solving and planning abilities.
• Flexibility to work across all areas of the processing facility.
