Professor/Associate Professor – Rural Health & Division Head

About the role

The Division of Rural Health (Ukwanda) at Stellenbosch University is seeking a senior academic leader to serve as Professor or Associate Professor in Rural Health and Head of the Division. The role spans the Tygerberg and Worcester campuses and involves strategic leadership of rural health education, research, and service.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and manage division activities to achieve excellence in rural health research and education.
• Ensure sustainable growth of rural health professions training programmes.
• Provide academic leadership for postgraduate programmes and courses in rural health.
• Promote and support rural health research, establishing active research programmes aligned with community needs.
• Lead rural training programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students, coordinating curriculum development and delivery.
• Design recruitment, selection, support, and retention strategies for students from rural backgrounds.
• Build and maintain partnerships with rural health facilities, service providers, and communities.
• Collaborate with other faculties to strengthen Stellenbosch University’s rural health footprint.
• Manage division staff and oversee day‑to‑day operations.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree in a health or education field.
• Undergraduate and/or postgraduate qualification in a health‑related discipline.
• Minimum five years of experience in the health sector and higher education.
• At least five years of academic experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate training.
