Professional Theatre Nurse (Specialty)

About the role

The KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Health is seeking qualified Professional Nurses with a specialty in operating theatre care to join Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital. The role involves delivering high‑quality nursing care to surgical patients and supporting the specialised unit’s objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in planning, organising and monitoring objectives of the specialised theatre unit in consultation with subordinates.
• Manage patients effectively, demonstrating concern, advocacy and responsive care.
• Provide proper treatment and care, remaining aware of and responsive to patients’ needs.

Required profile

• Grade 1: Minimum 4 years experience in General Nursing after registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Grade 2: Minimum 14 years experience in General Nursing, including at least 10 years after a one‑year post‑basic qualification in a relevant specialty.
• Senior Certificate or equivalent, Degree/Diploma in General Nursing.
• One‑year post‑basic qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science.
• Current registration with SANC and a valid SANC receipt for 2026.

Required skills

• Knowledge of nursing care processes, statutes and relevant legal frameworks (Nursing Acts, Health Act, Patient Rights Charter, etc.).
• Leadership, decision‑making and problem‑solving abilities within a public‑sector environment.
• Computer literacy in basic programmes.
