Pharmacy Assistant – Medicentres Pharmacy

About the role

The Pharmacy Assistant will support safe and effective pharmaceutical services in a hospital‑based Medicentres Pharmacy. Working under the direct supervision of a qualified pharmacist, the role involves dispensing, stock control and routine pharmacy operations in line with South African Pharmacy Council standards.

Key responsibilities

• Read and prepare prescriptions, label and supply medicines after pharmacist verification.
• Control and distribute Schedule 1‑4 medicines, including compounding non‑sterile preparations.
• Bill medication on prescription charts and reconcile invoices.
• Order, receive, unpack and stock medicines; monitor expiry dates and temperature logs.
• Perform stock takes, investigate variances and manage excess, short‑dated and expired stock lists.
• Assist with hospital stock control, emergency cupboard replenishment and ward stock distribution.
• Provide health‑promotion information and instructions on correct medicine use to patients.
• Maintain cleanliness of the dispensary and ensure compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) qualification.
• Registered Post‑basic Pharmacy Assistant with the South African Pharmacy Council.
• Minimum 1‑2 years of retail and hospital pharmacy experience; private hospital experience is advantageous.
• Ability to work under pressure, independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to perform shift work and take ownership of tasks.

Required skills

• Computer literacy.
• Proficiency with medication billing and pharmacy management systems.
• Ability to read and interpret prescriptions.
• Knowledge of handling requirements for Schedule 1‑4 medicines.
