Operative – General Maintenance

About the role

We are looking for an Operative to carry out general maintenance works and operations on highways, working alongside a Chargehand. The role involves routine, cyclical and emergency tasks, including winter maintenance support.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine and cyclical maintenance tasks on highways.
• Respond to emergencies and call‑outs, both during and out of normal hours.
• Assist with winter maintenance activities as a second man or driver’s mate.
• Operate small plant, equipment and mini excavators as required.
• Use PDA for recording work and complete electronic or paper record sheets.
• Take responsibility for plant and equipment safety.
• Be available for emergency and winter call‑outs on a rota basis.

Required profile

• Minimum 12 months’ experience in a similar role.
• Current driving licence; CSCS card if required by client.
• Interest in obtaining an LGV licence.
• Team player willing to work varying hours and adapt to different highway jobs.
• Commitment to health and safety and ability to follow risk assessments.
