Operations Manager – Commercial Fishing

About the role

Our client, a leading South African seafood company, is looking for an experienced Operations Manager to lead its commercial fishing fleet in Port Elizabeth. Reporting to the General Manager and Managing Director, you will be responsible for safe, efficient and profitable vessel operations.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day‑to‑day management of the commercial fishing fleet, ensuring vessels are safe, compliant and cost‑effective.
• Coordinate vessel maintenance, docking schedules, off‑loading activities and operational planning.
• Lead and develop both office‑based staff and vessel crews, fostering high performance.
• Build and maintain relationships with directors, skippers, regulators, service providers and other industry stakeholders.
• Monitor operational performance, identify improvement opportunities and implement solutions.
• Prepare monthly operational reports and provide feedback to senior leadership.
• Manage operational budgets, control costs and contribute to profitability.
• Ensure compliance with maritime, fisheries, safety and labour legislation.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of experience in the commercial fishing industry, including at least 5 years in an operational management role.
• Proven ability to manage multiple vessels and lead multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong knowledge of vessel operations, maintenance planning and regulatory compliance.
• Experience in budget management, performance monitoring and cost control.
• Excellent communication skills for interaction with senior leadership and external stakeholders.
• Relevant qualification in Fisheries Management, Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, Operations Management or a related field.
• Experience in the squid fishing sector is an advantage.
