Naval Architect

About the role

The Naval Architect will lead all naval architecture activities for marine mining and sampling vessels within De Beers Upstream Technology. Reporting to the Engineering Manager‑Technical Services Unit, the role covers design, construction, conversion, operation, repair and maintenance of vessels.

Key responsibilities

• Develop requirement specifications, general arrangements, class and detailed designs, including structural and topside elements.
• Perform vessel motion, mooring and dynamic positioning (DP) analyses, as well as trim and stability calculations meeting statutory requirements.
• Represent the client during vessel construction or conversion, ensuring warranty compliance and quality standards.
• Define and verify powering and propulsion solutions, and manage marine certification and safety plans.
• Lead on‑board stability, weight management, and stability software development.
• Obtain class and statutory approvals, and conduct structural evaluations such as fatigue strength assessments.
• Execute intact and damage stability calculations and provide emergency response support.
• Participate in cost‑saving initiatives, support cost estimates, and assist in developing project budgets and timelines.

Required profile

• Proven experience in naval architecture for commercial or offshore vessels.
• Strong understanding of classification societies, statutory regulations, and marine safety standards.
• Ability to liaise with clients, shipyards, and regulatory bodies throughout the vessel lifecycle.
• Excellent documentation and risk‑mitigation skills.
