Monitor Room Operator – Security Surveillance

About the role

The University of the Free State is seeking eight Monitor Room Operators to staff its South Campus security centre. You will be responsible for continuously observing live and recorded video feeds, ensuring the safety of staff, students and property through vigilant surveillance.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and maintain CCTV and other surveillance equipment.
• Watch multiple monitors simultaneously, note unusual occurrences and report them to the shift leader.
• Communicate via two‑way radio to direct officers to incidents quickly and safely.
• Store footage securely for investigation purposes.
• Test panic buttons (redpolls) weekly and submit reports.
• Monitor fire detection systems, alarms and intruder alerts.
• Activate response teams for alarms and record incidents for evidence.
• Produce incident and investigation reports for the shift leader.
• Identify and log faulty equipment, escalating issues as needed.
• Conduct preliminary investigations using CCTV footage and provide statements.
• Attend court cases or disciplinary hearings when required.
• Perform static guarding, patrolling and crime‑prevention duties as directed.
• Provide backup during incidents and cover duty‑room operations when needed.

Required profile

• Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) qualification.
• Valid Grade C PSIRA certificate.
• Minimum one (1) year of relevant security or surveillance experience.
• Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
• Strong written communication for accurate reporting.
• Willingness to attend court or disciplinary hearings as required.
