Mine Engineer – Mining Design & Stability

About the role

Sasol is seeking a Mine Engineer to validate design methodology and parameters for excavations, ensuring the long‑term stability of coal mines in line with health and safety regulations. The role combines technical expertise with the development of safe‑practice standards and training for operational teams.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert advice on balancing safety, cost and production for both operational and long‑term mining plans.
• Create and embed ground‑management, equipment‑retrieval, and mine‑stability standards.
• Train specialists and operating personnel on rock‑mass risks and lead indicators.
• Ensure stability of critical capital structures and environmentally sensitive areas through appropriate excavation and pillar design.
• Identify, develop and introduce best practices for mine design, support design, and monitoring tools.
• Manage the annual rock‑engineering budget and monitor its impact on mining cost, production rate, and reserve utilisation.
• Report on budget performance, cash flow, and total‑cost‑of‑ownership against benchmarks.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mining, civil or related discipline).
• Certificate of Competency (GCC) or equivalent governance certification.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in mine design, rock engineering or geotechnical analysis.
• Strong focus on safety, cost efficiency and continuous improvement.
• Ability to develop training material and communicate complex concepts simply.
