Medical Officer (Grade 1‑3)

About the role

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is seeking Medical Officers (Grade 1‑3) to deliver cost‑effective, holistic patient care across the province. The role involves clinical governance, data management, training, and outreach to clinics in the Northern/Tygerberg Sub‑District.

Key responsibilities

• Provide holistic, cost‑effective patient care and forensic/social services.
• Manage physical and financial resources, ensuring clinical governance and quality of care.
• Deliver training, development and effective data management.
• Offer outreach services to clinics, guiding colleagues on complex primary health‑care cases.

Required profile

• Medical practitioner registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or equivalent foreign council.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel for relief duties.
• Valid Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certificates.
• Experience varies by grade: Grade 1 (0‑1 year), Grade 2 (5‑6 years), Grade 3 (10‑11 years) after registration.

Required skills

• Experience with general medical and surgical conditions at primary health‑care level.
• Knowledge of South African TB and HIV care guidelines, including drug‑resistant TB and paediatric HIV.
• Computer literacy (MS Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
