Mechanical Engineer – JHB

About the role

The Mechanical Engineer will lead the engineering, design, technical evaluation and execution of bulk materials handling projects from concept through commissioning. The role demands strong mechanical engineering expertise, client engagement and technical leadership to deliver commercially competitive and compliant solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse client scopes, conduct risk assessments and support bid/no‑bid decisions.
• Provide technical clarifications, define scope and document engineering assumptions.
• Perform detailed engineering calculations, design reviews and ensure compliance with standards and client specifications.
• Support cost estimation, pricing and value‑engineering initiatives.
• Lead conveyor system optimisation, evaluate alternative technologies and drive continuous improvement.
• Develop technical data sheets, engage vendors and validate supplier information.
• Oversee project execution, monitor engineering deliverables and support commissioning activities.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote best engineering practices.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; ECSA registration (Pr. Eng.) or in process (EIT).
• Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, conveyor system design and bulk materials handling projects.
• Proven experience in tendering, project execution, multidisciplinary team collaboration and commissioning.

Required skills

• Mechanical engineering calculations, design validation and equipment specification development.
• Proficiency with design software such as Sidewinder, Helix, Belt Analyst and DEM Pro.
• Use of AI tools in the design environment.
• Cost optimisation, technical bid evaluation and vendor management.
