Legal Counsel – Fintech (Hybrid, Cape Town)

About the role

Our client, a leading financial infrastructure platform enabling digital payments across Africa, is seeking a Legal Counsel with fintech expertise. Based in Cape Town and working in a hybrid model, the role supports the Legal, Risk, Regulatory and Compliance team by providing commercial and regulatory advice.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts including service, partnership, SaaS and vendor agreements.
• Prepare contract summaries, stakeholder briefing documents and risk reports for revenue teams.
• Advise on legal issues related to contracts, renewals and terminations.
• Communicate and negotiate with external partners, counsel and clients.
• Research and advise on relevant regulations such as the National Payment Systems Act, COFI Bill, SARB directives, PASA frameworks, FICA, NCA, Banks Act, CPA and POPIA.
• Assist in developing, implementing and maintaining compliant policies and procedures.

Required profile

• 5‑7 years post‑articles experience in a top‑tier South African law firm or in‑house, preferably within fintech, financial regulation or payments.
• LLB degree and admission as a legal practitioner/attorney.
• Strong commercial contracting experience across SaaS, partnerships and vendor agreements.
• Ability to balance risk with business objectives and deliver clear, plain‑language advice.
• Excellent negotiation and stakeholder‑management skills.

Required skills

• Knowledge of South African financial legislation (National Payment Systems Act, COFI Bill, SARB directives, PASA, FICA, NCA, Banks Act, CPA, POPIA).
