Legal Advisor

About the role

The Legal Advisor will support the Merchant Division of the Lesaka Group by ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. Reporting to the group General Counsel and the division’s management team, the role involves close collaboration with existing legal advisors across the group.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, comment on and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements and related documents.
• Interpret existing contractual arrangements and provide legal advice to the business.
• Advise on legal positions and regulatory requirements applicable to the Merchant Division.
• Identify, assess and mitigate legal risks associated with products, processes and functions.
• Monitor regulatory developments and proactively flag potential concerns.
• Manage litigation and legal disputes, including engaging external counsel when necessary.
• Provide administrative and other legal support to the Merchant Division.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from an accredited South African university.
• Minimum 3 years post‑articles experience at a top‑tier South African law firm or proven in‑house experience in the national payment or financial services industry.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Companies Act, National Payment Systems Act, SARB directives, PASA frameworks, FICA, National Credit Act, POPIA and Consumer Protection Act.
• Demonstrated experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
