Legal Advisor – Investment & Asset Management

About the role

As a Legal Advisor at Ashburton Investments you will support the investment and asset‑management businesses across retail, commercial and corporate client segments. You will provide specialised legal advice on a range of financial products and structures, ensuring compliance with South African regulations and internal policies.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on the legal aspects of LMA transactions, liability‑driven investments, structured notes, funds, collective investment schemes and securitisation structures.
• Draft, negotiate and review investment‑management agreements, ISDA master agreements, custody, administration, prime‑brokerage, co‑investment, asset‑swap and rebate agreements.
• Conduct due‑diligence and support fund listings, migrations and litigation matters.
• Monitor changes in financial‑services legislation, distribution and marketing regulations affecting funds and investment managers.
• Provide guidance to junior legal advisers and coordinate with external counsel.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with experience in investment‑management or financial‑services law.
• Strong understanding of South African regulatory framework and industry best practices.
• Ability to analyse complex transactions and identify legal risk.
• Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.
• Proactive attitude and capacity to mentor junior staff.

Required skills

• Knowledge of LMA transaction documentation.
• Familiarity with liability‑driven investments, structured notes and securitisation.
• Experience with ISDA, fund‑migration and litigation processes.
• Understanding of financial‑services legislation affecting funds and advisors.
