Laboratory Technician / Engineering Technologist

About the role

The Citra Laboratory is the hub where new building materials are tested for performance and safety. As a Laboratory Technician / Engineering Technologist you will ensure that every experiment is executed with scientific rigor and that the data generated drives product development.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct standard and non‑standard destructive tests (compression, tensile, flexural) on concrete, composites and steel components.
• Prepare, mix, cast and cure test specimens according to precise mix designs and cure schedules.
• Capture test results instantly in Citra’s digital reporting system and draft concise lab reports with observations and failure analysis.
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, manage inventory of raw materials and consumables, and enforce health‑and‑safety protocols.

Required profile

• National Diploma, BTech or BSc in Civil Engineering, Material Science or a related field.
• 1–3 years of hands‑on experience in a construction materials laboratory (commercial or academic).
• Familiarity with testing standards such as SANS, ASTM or ISO for concrete and cementitious materials.
• Competence with Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs) for data logging and reporting.

Required skills

• Material testing techniques (compression, tensile, flexural).
• Operation and troubleshooting of hydraulic testing machines and data loggers.
• Equipment calibration, maintenance and routine servicing.
• Data integrity and reporting using Google Sheets and Docs.
• Knowledge of SANS/ASTM/ISO testing standards for cementitious materials.
