Kitchen Assistant – Haven Old Age Home

About the role

The Haven Night Shelter seeks a Kitchen Assistant to support the Haven Old Age Home in Woodstock, Cape Town. The role involves maintaining hygiene standards, preparing ingredients and assisting the kitchen team while reporting directly to the manager.

Key responsibilities

• Clean and sanitise all food preparation areas according to hygiene standards.
• Wash and store cooking appliances, utensils, cutting boards and dishes.
• Prepare meal ingredients by washing, peeling, cutting and chopping fruit, vegetables, poultry and meat.
• Sweep and mop kitchen floors and wipe down walls.
• Assist with unloading and organising delivered food supplies.
• Store food supplies correctly and transfer ingredients to the kitchen as instructed.

Required profile

• Reside near the shelter (Woodstock or surrounding areas).
• Hold a chef’s diploma or professional cookery certificate from an accredited school.
• Minimum of one year kitchen work experience.
• Ability to work shifts and alternate weekends.
• Knowledge of food safety regulations and health‑safety practices.
• Good verbal communication and ability to work as a team player.
• Sober habits, no criminal record and good health.
• Experience in the NGO sector is an advantage.
