Junior Legal Advisor

About the role

Metropolitan is seeking a Junior Legal Advisor to provide practical, commercially‑relevant legal advice within its life insurance business. You will help identify, manage and mitigate legal risks, ensuring compliance with South African insurance and financial services legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Interpret legislation, regulatory requirements and internal policies, delivering clear legal advice to business units.
• Assess and communicate the impact of regulatory and operational changes on the organisation.
• Draft, review and maintain contracts, ensuring they protect the company’s legal and commercial interests.
• Update contract templates and keep accurate contract records.
• Interpret and implement applicable regulations, respond to regulatory queries, and monitor legislative developments.
• Identify legal risks, recommend mitigation measures and escalate material risks appropriately.
• Support legal governance processes and controls.
• Manage dispute and litigation matters, including coordination with external legal service providers and preparation of supporting documentation.

Required profile

• LLB degree.
• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Minimum 3 years of legal experience, preferably in financial services.
• Higher Diploma in Financial Planning (advantageous).
• Foundational knowledge of South African insurance and financial services legislation, contract law, privacy law, payment systems regulation, retirement legislation and basic litigation management principles.
