Intermediate Software Engineer (C#/.NET, Angular, SQL Server)

About the role

RELX's LexisNexis Legal & Professional team is looking for an Intermediate Software Engineer in Johannesburg. You will help build and enhance web-based software that supports pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device manufacturers in meeting global regulatory requirements. The work spans backend services, user interfaces, data platforms and cloud technologies, with AI-assisted development applied responsibly.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain C#/.NET APIs, microservices, background processes and Angular user interfaces.
• Modernise legacy applications through well-scoped changes that improve maintainability, reliability and user experience.
• Design and work with Microsoft SQL Server data models, queries and integrations.
• Use approved AI development tools to plan, implement, test, debug, refactor and document work, reviewing and validating AI-generated output.
• Write automated tests and apply test-driven development where it clarifies behaviour and reduces risk.
• Take part in code reviews, technical discussions and shared decisions on design and implementation.
• Work with Azure services, CI/CD pipelines, logging and monitoring to deliver and support production software.
• Collaborate with product, quality engineering, architecture, security and operations teams from requirements through release and support.

Required profile

• Around 3 or more years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent evidence of delivering production software.
• Ability to own moderately complex tasks, communicate progress and trade-offs, and seek input on decisions with wider architectural or customer impact.
• Care for security, data privacy, reliability and clear documentation.

Required skills

• Practical experience with C#.NET, REST APIs, Angular and TypeScript.
• Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including queries and data access performance.
• Automated testing, Git, code review and iterative delivery.
• Experience with AI coding tools, or a strong willingness to adopt them thoughtfully.
• Helpful: Azure, Azure DevOps, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, legacy modernisation, microservice integration, observability, production troubleshooting, or software in life sciences, healthcare, regulatory or other high-trust environments.
