Instrument Maintenance Technician – Durban, South Africa

About the role

We are seeking an Instrument Maintenance Technician to join our plant in Durban. The role involves installation, repair and preventive maintenance of instrument and control equipment to ensure reliable operation while adhering to EHS standards.

Key responsibilities

• Attend to all instrument and control equipment breakdowns and perform planned, preventive and predictive maintenance with minimal supervision.
• Diagnose instrument and control failures, troubleshoot plant equipment and execute repairs promptly.
• Complete maintenance tasks in line with safety procedures, maintenance plans and operational requirements.
• Carry out scheduled equipment calibrations and maintain accurate records.
• Use SAP to order spare parts, log work orders and track maintenance history.
• Monitor recurring breakdowns, recommend and implement modifications to eliminate root causes.
• Provide guidance and knowledge transfer to newly joined instrument mechanics.
• Work shift duties and be on call for breakdowns as required by the shift operation manager.

Required profile

• Higher secondary education or diploma.
• Previous experience in a power or desalination plant, familiar with plant safety practices.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and manuals.
• Willingness to work in hot, dirty environments and at height on platforms.
• Flexibility to work shift patterns and respond to emergency breakdown calls.

Required skills

• Knowledge of pressure, temperature, level and flow measuring devices.
• Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic valve actuation systems.
• Familiarity with CO2 fire‑protection systems.
• Understanding of infrared gas detection systems.
• Proficiency in using SAP CMMS for work order management.
• Competence with electrical, electronic, computer, hydraulic and pneumatic devices.
