Infrastructure Technician - Junior

About the role

The Infrastructure Technician – Junior will support the maintenance and expansion of Herotel’s wireless and fibre network infrastructure at the Central Hub in Bronkhorstspruit. Working under the guidance of senior team members, the role involves hands‑on installation, climbing, and repair activities on communications towers and fibre routes.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the construction, installation and maintenance of communications towers, fibre networks and supporting structures.
• Respond to network outages, including high‑site tower failures and fibre breaks, while meeting project deadlines.
• Climb towers of 50 m or more carrying up to 20 kg of equipment.
• Install, maintain and weather‑proof cable, connector types, power equipment and data routers.
• Erect self‑supporting and stayed masts and perform ad‑hoc tasks as directed.
• Identify safety hazards, follow work schedules, and escalate issues to senior technicians.

Required profile

• 1–2 years of industry experience in telecom or related field.
• Valid driver’s licence (off‑road experience advantageous) and up‑to‑date medical certificate.
• Completed Working at Heights and Tower Rescue training.
• Physical fitness to climb towers with load, weight limit 125 kg and waist circumference ≤150 cm.
• Grade 12 education; maths and science knowledge advantageous.

Required skills

• Installation and configuration of wireless and fibre network equipment.
• Construction and maintenance of communications towers and fibre infrastructure.
• Use of hand tools, mechanical equipment and safety harnesses.
• Basic computer skills and understanding of AC/DC electricity.
• Basic knowledge of solar energy, power and battery systems.
• Fundamentals of network and RF principles, troubleshooting and routing protocols.
• Knowledge of cable, connector and trunking techniques.
• Weather‑proofing of installations and repair of power equipment and data routers.
