Import Controller – Sea Freight Imports

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Sea Freight Imports Controller to join our Durban team. You will coordinate the movement of sea cargo, ensure all documentation is in order, and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.

Key responsibilities

• Acknowledge and capture each new order in the schedule and POMS system.
• Action orders with agents at the port of loading, monitor progress and provide regular client feedback.
• Check pre‑alert documents, ensure EUR1 certificates and any required permits are secured.
• Perform daily invoicing (minimum 10 invoices per day) and follow up with transporters on deliveries.
• Coordinate pricing negotiations, submit estimates for customer approval, and select appropriate carriers.
• Instruct agents on bill of lading preparation and other required shipping documents.
• Approve service provider invoices, verify tariffs, and ensure all costs are recovered.
• Maintain accurate filing of shipping, financial and commercial documents, and ensure original bills of lading are retained.
• Capture all orders onto the Purchase Order Management System (POMS) and ensure files meet checklist requirements before vessel arrival.

Required profile

• 3‑5 years of experience in sea freight imports.
• Team player able to work under pressure in an organized, structured manner.
• General knowledge of forwarding, landside clearance and delivery processes.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Self‑motivated, deadline‑driven and able to work independently.
• Matric qualification, valid driver’s licence and own vehicle.
