Import Controller

About the role

The Import Controller coordinates customs clearance, documentation and shipment processing for both import and export activities. This role ensures timely release of cargo, minimises demurrage and storage costs, and acts as the primary liaison with customs authorities and internal teams.

Key responsibilities

• Receive client instructions and documents to arrange customs clearance for shipments.
• Open files, update registers and cross‑check shipping documents such as invoices, packing lists, bills of lading and certificates of origin.
• Process Electronic Road Manifest (ERM) for over‑border transit cargo and prepare shipping orders for transport planning.
• Handle customs clearance and port documentation for import and export shipments, including EUR1 certificates and cargo dues via the TNPA system.
• Submit weekly and monthly statistics for import and export movements and verify invoices before authorisation.
• Coordinate customs, shipping and port documents for empty container sales, ship spares, and transshipment shipments.
• Engage directly with SARS and internal teams to resolve clearance issues, stops and documentation discrepancies.
• Track shipments, provide quotations and advise clients on export requirements and procedures.
• Arrange bookings, container placement/packing, customs documentation and shipping instructions for export and coastwise shipments.
• Supervise break‑bulk shipments and manage miscellaneous customs and operational matters.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or equivalent; a degree or professional certification in logistics management is preferred.
• 5–10 years of experience handling import and export shipments across sea, road and air modes.
• Strong knowledge of Incoterms, shipping documents and customs regulations.
• Ability to work under pressure, with minimal supervision, while maintaining high accuracy.
• Computer literate with good verbal and written communication skills.
