Health & Safety Representative (SHE Rep) – Full Time

About the role

Represent employees on occupational health and safety matters and perform the functions of a Health and Safety Representative as defined in section 18 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.

Key responsibilities

• Review the effectiveness of workplace health and safety measures.
• Identify potential hazards and potential major incidents.
• Examine the causes of incidents and participate in incident investigations and internal safety audits.
• Investigate employees’ occupational health and safety complaints.
• Make representations and recommendations to the employer or Health and Safety Committee.
• Inspect the workplace, including articles, substances, plant, machinery and health and safety equipment, after reasonable notice to the employer.
• Participate in consultations with inspectors and accompany an inspector during workplace inspections.
• Attend Health and Safety Committee meetings and report hazards, complaints and outstanding corrective actions.
• Visit incident sites and attend inspections, investigations or formal inquiries where permitted under the Act.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
• Health and Safety Representative training, or willingness to complete employer‑provided training.
• Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, particularly sections 17 and 18.
• Good communication, observation, record‑keeping and problem‑solving skills.
• Must be employed full‑time at, and familiar with, the workplace or designated area represented, as required by section 17.
