Graduate Software Engineer – Open Source & Linux (Ubuntu)

About the role

We are looking for a Graduate Software Engineer to join Canonical’s Ubuntu team. This entry‑level position offers the chance to work on large‑scale open‑source projects that power cloud, AI, IoT and enterprise infrastructure worldwide. You will collaborate in a remote‑first, globally distributed environment with strong mentorship and regular in‑person sprints.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and improve open‑source and commercial software products across diverse engineering teams.
• Write clean, efficient production‑grade code in languages such as Python, Go, Rust, C/C++, JavaScript or Java.
• Work on the full stack, from low‑level Linux components to cloud‑native technologies and Ubuntu environments.
• Participate in design discussions, global engineering sprints and roadmap planning.
• Engage with users, contributors and internal teams through code reviews, issue tracking and community interaction.
• Support debugging, issue resolution and customer‑facing problem solving with a focus on reliability and performance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or a related STEM field.
• Strong academic record and demonstrated high performance in technical studies or projects.
• Passion for software engineering and open‑source ecosystems.
• Motivation to learn quickly, contribute actively and grow in a fast‑paced engineering environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, Go, Rust, C/C++, JavaScript or Java.
• Familiarity with Linux‑based environments and interest in systems‑level development.
• Analytical thinking, problem‑solving ability and attention to detail.
