Fire Fighter – Emergency Response & Hazmat Specialist

About the role

The Fire Fighter will protect lives, property and the environment by responding to fire and emergency situations across Transnet’s port and rail facilities. The role involves fire prevention, equipment maintenance and specialised emergency procedures, including hazardous material incidents.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain operational readiness of fire equipment and conduct regular inspections of cargo sheds, warehouses, vessels and rail infrastructure.
• Perform fire patrols, hot‑work inspections and grain‑elevator dust‑explosion checks.
• Man the fire control room and fire equipment on board tugs during vessel incidents.
• Handle all Hazmat and fire‑suppression equipment, including detection, sprinkler and suppression systems.
• Command incident sites until higher authority arrives and coordinate with emergency services.
• Inspect dangerous‑goods freight in marshalling yards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Required profile

• Grade 12 with accredited Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 qualifications (SAQA/IFSAC).
• Hazmat Awareness and Operational accreditation (SAQA/IFSAC).
• First Aid Level 3 or Basic Ambulance Assistant certificate.
• Valid driver’s licence (minimum C1) with PrDP.
• Knowledge of port/rail operations, hazardous‑substance labeling, fire engineering, SANS codes and occupational health & safety.
• Attributes: hard‑working, punctual, honest, team‑oriented and capable of leading.
