Environmental Permit Consultant – Mining Operations

About the role

Manhattan Corporation is looking for an experienced Environmental Permit Consultant to lead the environmental permitting and regulatory compliance for a producing mining operation on the East Rand. The role is critical for securing statutory approvals, removing regulatory bottlenecks and keeping projects on schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage all environmental permitting activities for the mining operation.
• Drive statutory approvals through the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and other relevant authorities.
• Prepare, coordinate and oversee Environmental Authorisations, Waste Management Licences, Water Use Licences and Environmental Management Programme reports, including amendments.
• Lead Section 102 amendment applications under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and manage Section 24G rectification applications under the National Environmental Management Act.
• Expedite permit amendments to minimise project delays and maintain operational continuity.
• Liaise directly with regulatory authorities, environmental specialists, consultants and internal project teams.
• Identify permitting risks and implement practical mitigation strategies.

Required profile

• Registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) with EAPASA – or an EAP working under supervision of a registered EAP.
• Proven environmental permitting experience within the South African mining industry, specifically with Section 102 and Section 24G applications.
• Relevant qualification in Environmental Science, Natural Sciences or a related discipline.
• Strong working knowledge of DMRE and DFFE permitting processes.
• Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
