Engineering Superintendent – Shafts

About the role

The Engineering Superintendent – Shafts will lead the planning, organization and optimisation of vertical shaft operations, logistics and underground working areas at South Deep Gold Mine. Reporting to senior engineering management, you will ensure safe, efficient performance aligned with company standards and maintenance regimes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead operational safety, health, environmental and risk‑management campaigns, demonstrating visible leadership on site.
• Stay current with statutory and regulatory changes and ensure full compliance.
• Conduct regular safety inspections, audits and risk assessments to mitigate operational hazards.
• Investigate safety incidents and accidents, implement corrective actions and monitor their effectiveness.
• Plan, schedule and execute material conveyance, rigging and slinging activities for shaft logistics.
• Develop and maintain team capability, performance management and sourcing strategies.
• Manage budget and cost control for shaft equipment, infrastructure and related mining sections.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or equivalent with a relevant trade certificate.
• Minimum 8 years of shaft operations experience, including at least 5 years as a shaft foreman or equivalent.
• Proven track record supervising vertical conveyances and shaft logistics.
• Advanced knowledge of legal and regulatory standards governing mining shafts.
• Medically fit for the position and pass a heat‑tolerance screening test.
