Engineering Manager

About the role

Our client is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a high‑trust software engineering team in Cape Town. The role blends people leadership, technical oversight and strategic influence to deliver high‑quality products while shaping engineering culture and practices.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and motivate a team of 4‑6 engineers, setting clear expectations and providing coaching, feedback and development plans.
• Partner with Product and stakeholders to align engineering work with business goals, define OKRs and ensure delivery of functional and non‑functional requirements.
• Drive agile practices (Scrum, Kanban), track metrics such as DORA and SPACE, and champion continuous improvement.
• Own architectural decisions, guide design reviews and ensure solutions follow Java/Spring standards and broader technical roadmap.
• Promote AI‑assisted tooling across the development lifecycle and manage technical debt while balancing speed and quality.
• Participate in on‑call rotation, oversee operational issues and ensure compliance with security, governance and regulatory standards.

Required profile

• 3+ years experience managing engineering teams and 8+ years hands‑on software development, primarily with Java.
• Proven ability to mentor engineers across all levels, drive performance and foster a collaborative culture.
• Experience delivering complex projects, using CI/CD pipelines, containerisation and cloud environments.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with graduates to executive stakeholders.
