Engineer - Geotechnical

About the role

Join AECOM’s Enterprise Capabilities team in Durban as a Geotechnical Engineer, contributing to technical solutions and field activities for a variety of infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Utilize basic scientific principles, theories, and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope.
• Assist with monitoring geotechnical field activities to ensure compliance with project requirements and proper assessment.
• Liaise with geotechnical contractors to meet client expectations and project deadlines.
• Ensure correctness and completeness of all deliverables (reports, drawings, etc.) and align them with field conditions.
• Assist the geotechnical team in preparing contractual correspondence and be willing to travel internationally as project needs dictate.

Required profile

• Ability to collaborate closely with Technical Directors, Associates, and clients throughout project delivery.
• Provide on‑the‑job mentoring to junior staff and support their progression toward chartered status.
• Proven leadership experience with the capacity to inspire and lead multidisciplinary teams.
• Prepare, check, and review technical documents such as desk studies, interpretative reports, specifications, and design drawings.
• Demonstrable understanding of current design codes, standards, and best practices in geotechnical design.

Required skills

• Geotechnical design experience including settlement analysis, retaining walls, shallow and deep foundations, earthworks, and slope design.
• Proficiency with geotechnical software: GEO5, WALLAP, ALP, SlopeW/Slide, Plaxis.
• Competence in AutoCAD/Civil 3D for drawing production.
• Strong knowledge of soil and rock mechanics.
• Good knowledge of Eurocodes (desirable).
