Electronic Assistant – SCADA & Substation Security

About the role

The Electronic Assistant is responsible for installing, commissioning, repairing and maintaining supervisory and substation security systems and equipment for eThekwini’s electricity network. The role supports safe and reliable operation of SCADA and related control systems in substations.

Key responsibilities

• Construct, maintain, operate, repair and test SCADA‑related and substation security equipment.
• Install and commission substation security devices and associated wiring schedules.
• Conduct fault finding, troubleshooting and problem‑solving for system malfunctions.
• Update system databases and computerised records of faults and maintenance activities.
• Provide technical guidance, supervision and training to junior electricians and apprentices.
• Promote workplace safety in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Required profile

• NTC2 or NCV3 qualification in Electrical Engineering from a recognized college.
• Trade‑tested Artisan (Electrician) accreditation.
• Valid driver’s licence and Professional Driving Permit (or obtain within 6 months).
• At least 3 years of practical experience in construction, operation or maintenance of distribution/transmission networks, plus 3 years post‑trade‑test experience.
• First‑Aid certification (or obtain within 6 months) and compliance with eThekwini safety rules.
