About the role
iX engineers, a leading multi‑disciplinary consulting engineering firm operating across Africa and the Middle East, is seeking an Electrical Engineer/Technologist to join its Electrical Department in Durban. The role involves delivering high‑quality electrical design solutions for a variety of infrastructure projects while supporting business development and ensuring compliance with quality, health and safety standards.
Key responsibilities
- Attend tender briefings, prepare tender documentation, write method statements, assist with pricing calculations and contribute to the tender process.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, risk analysis, quality management and health & safety requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead the conceptualisation, design development and detailed design of electrical and electronic building services, including power, lighting, fire detection, access control, CCTV, nurse‑call, PA, emergency power (generator/UPS), telecoms containment and fibre networks.
- Design renewable energy systems such as solar PV and battery energy storage (BESS) where applicable.
- Manage small to medium‑size projects, oversee project start‑up, change management, procurement, construction, commissioning and testing activities.
- Provide technical support, supervision and advice to multidisciplinary teams and participate in peer reviews.
- Prepare project documentation – proposals, estimates, budgets, schedules, drawings and tender packages – and present design solutions to clients for approval.
- Mentor and coach junior engineers/technologists and contribute to the development of discipline‑specific technical standards.
Required profile
- B.Eng or B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognised institution.
- Professional registration with ECSA preferred or eligibility for registration within one year of appointment.
- Experience in design of electrical and electronic building services; exposure to medical facility projects is an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to lead design and delivery of small to medium projects on time and within budget.
- Strong understanding of statutory and regulatory requirements for electrical services.
