Electrical Design Engineer – Transformer Design

About the role

Our client, an established engineering manufacturer of specialised transformer solutions for industrial and mining sectors, is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer. You will be responsible for the full electrical design lifecycle of oil‑immersed and dry‑type transformers, from calculations through to manufacturing support and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Develop complete electrical designs for new, repeat, modified and specialised oil‑immersed and dry‑type transformers.
• Perform transformer design calculations covering core size, winding dimensions, conductor lengths, clearances, insulation, impedance, losses, temperature rise, cooling and short‑circuit withstand.
• Prepare bills of material, technical schedules, drawings and supporting engineering documentation.
• Support manufacturing by resolving production problems, reviewing design changes and developing procedures and quality‑control checklists.
• Provide technical guidance during testing, investigate flash‑over, insulation and winding issues, and conduct root‑cause and failure investigations.
• Participate in tender clarifications, customer technical meetings and site visits, and contribute to design tool and standard improvements.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years’ experience designing and testing transformers.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent); postgraduate studies advantageous.
• ECSA Professional Engineer or Candidate Engineer registration preferred.
• Experience with oil‑immersed transformer design and documentation.
