Drill Rig Operator – 6‑Month Fixed‑Term Contract

About the role

De Beers Consolidated Mines is seeking experienced drill rig operators for a six‑month fixed‑term contract at the Venetia underground diamond mine in South Africa. You will operate double‑boom split‑feed drill rigs to install primary and secondary support and perform face drilling in a trackless mechanised environment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate Sandvik double‑boom drill rigs (DD421, DD420, DD321, DD320) to install welded mesh, split sets, roofbolts and resin bolts according to a predetermined support pattern.
• Take over and hand over shifts, address any abnormalities and report to the supervisor.
• Conduct visual inspections of equipment before and during operation and report defects promptly.
• Record operational data and compile production reports as required.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area and assist with both breakdown and planned maintenance activities.
• Participate in cost‑saving initiatives and adhere to financial procedures.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12/N3 or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
• MQA Competent A and B Certificate for underground mining.
• Double Boom Drill Rig Certificate.
• At least 3 years of practical experience operating a double‑boom split‑feed drill rig in an underground mechanised mine.
• Experience installing primary support with welded wire mesh, split sets and resin bolts.
• Ability to drill and install long anchors and support multiple development ends in one shift.

• Face drilling and long‑anchor drilling.
• Visual equipment inspection and basic maintenance.
• Recording of operational data and production reporting.
