Director of Strategic Initiatives

About the role

The University of Zululand is seeking a Director of Strategic Initiatives to lead and coordinate institution‑wide transformation projects. This senior leader will translate the university’s vision and strategic objectives into measurable outcomes, ensuring accountability, evidence‑based planning, and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the planning, execution and monitoring of cross‑functional initiatives.
• Oversee institutional performance management, monitoring and evaluation systems, and data‑driven decision‑making.
• Ensure compliance with South African higher‑education governance frameworks and relevant legislation.
• Coordinate complex transformation projects and manage risk throughout the project lifecycle.
• Strengthen data governance, institutional reporting and intelligence processes.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Strategic Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, Education Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Data Analytics or a related field (Doctorate preferred).
• Minimum 8 years of relevant management experience, including at least 5 years at senior level.
• Proven experience in strategic institutional initiatives, performance monitoring and project management within higher education or comparable complex organisations.
• Strong knowledge of South African higher‑education governance and transformation projects.
