Designated Environment Officer (DEO)

About the role

The Designated Environment Officer (DEO) will support Bantubani Group’s road construction and routine road maintenance projects across South Africa. Reporting to the project engineer, the DEO ensures that all environmental obligations are met and that the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) is effectively implemented on site.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and assess environmental impacts and aspects associated with daily construction activities.
• Prepare and submit progress, implementation and status reports to the Engineer and relevant authorities.
• Assist in the implementation of the CEMP and communicate its requirements to all personnel, contractors and subcontractors.
• Conduct environmental inspections, audits and follow‑up on corrective and preventive actions.
• Perform environmental risk assessments, review method statements and ensure compliance with permits.
• Facilitate environmental awareness training and presentations for site teams.
• Support Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) initiatives and monitor environmental performance.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies to obtain and maintain environmental permits and approvals.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Health and Environmental Management (NQF Level 7) or higher.
• Minimum of three SANRAL road construction or routine road maintenance projects valued at R80 million + (incl. VAT).
• Active registration as an Environmental Officer with SACNASP.
• Strong knowledge of industrial construction processes, including waste, effluent and airborne emissions management.
• Excellent written communication and a proactive, independent work approach.
