Design Engineer – Renewable Energy Projects

About the role

AltGen is seeking a skilled Design Engineer to support the engineering design process for renewable energy projects in South Africa. The role covers the full project lifecycle, from early‑stage feasibility to construction and commissioning, ensuring designs are technically sound, compliant and cost‑effective.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and review designs for solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid projects.
• Support feasibility studies, concept and detailed designs, and produce technical documentation.
• Prepare and review electrical design documents such as single‑line diagrams, layouts, cable schedules, equipment specifications and calculations.
• Liaise with internal project teams, consultants, suppliers, contractors and clients.
• Ensure designs meet relevant standards, grid codes, regulations and project requirements.
• Assist procurement, construction, commissioning and technical due‑diligence activities.
• Identify design risks and propose practical engineering solutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering.
• At least 3 years of experience designing renewable energy systems.
• Strong understanding of solar PV, wind, BESS or hybrid energy systems.
• Knowledge of grid‑connection requirements and technical standards is advantageous.

Required skills

• Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, HelioScope, DigSILENT and ETAP.
