Data Engineer – Cloud & ETL Specialist

About the role

Our client in Cape Town is seeking a Data Engineer to join their team on a contract basis. The role focuses on designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines and warehouses using modern cloud technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse business requirements and translate them into effective data solutions.
• Design and develop data layers for big‑data analytics, including data lakes and warehouses.
• Build, test, and maintain ETL pipelines that ingest data from multiple sources.
• Develop and optimise data replication processes on GCP and Oracle environments.
• Create and maintain technical documentation and ensure compliance with SDLC standards.
• Collaborate with product teams, data analysts, and stakeholders to deliver high‑quality data products.
• Monitor ticket progress, manage change requests, and participate in standby rotations when required.
• Manage GCP costs and infrastructure to support reliable data extraction, transformation, and loading.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering or a related field.
• 4–5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a data‑focused role.
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) with hands‑on experience in the GCP data ecosystem.
• Proficiency in relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQL Server.
• Experience with dimensional modelling, ETL processes and data‑warehouse development.
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and Agile development practices.
