Communications Manager – Sustainability Transitions

About the role

The Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST) at Stellenbosch University seeks a dynamic Communications Manager to lead its communication strategy. This full‑time role will shape CST’s visibility, influence and credibility across research, policy and public audiences.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and annually update a strategic communications plan and budget aligned with CST priorities.
• Build and maintain relationships with university corporate communications, media outlets and partner organisations.
• Design and execute media engagement strategies, including press releases, interviews and thought‑leadership placement.
• Identify opportunities to influence public discourse on sustainability transitions.
• Support marketing of postgraduate programmes in partnership with specialist providers.
• Maintain a coherent institutional identity and oversee internal communication across programmes.
• Create and curate content for the website, social media, newsletters and other dissemination channels.
• Translate complex research into accessible outputs such as op‑eds, policy briefs, reports and short videos.

Required profile

• Proven experience in strategic communications, media relations and content creation.
• Ability to work at the interface of research and society, translating academic work for non‑specialist audiences.
• Strong stakeholder‑management skills and experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
