Clinical Coder – Billing Operations Centre

About the role

The Clinical Coder will work within the Billing Operations Centre to ensure accurate and complete coding of patient events for reimbursement. Reporting to the Clinical Coding Specialist, you will liaise with clinicians, patients and managed‑care organisations to apply ICD‑10 and CCSA codes.

Key responsibilities

• Assign and sequence ICD‑10 and CCSA diagnostic and procedural codes for all patient events, ensuring compliance with coding standards.
• Audit clinical documentation and coding accuracy, identify deficiencies and initiate corrective actions.
• Collaborate with doctors, billing teams and funders to resolve coding queries, rejections and disputes.
• Support billing operation clusters by providing coding expertise and participating in process‑improvement projects.
• Analyse coding trends with the data analytics team and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Essential diploma or degree in Nursing (or equivalent NQF level 6) and registration with the South African Nursing Council or similar professional body.
• Minimum three years of clinical coding or case‑management experience in a hospital environment.
• Completed advanced ICD‑10 training (Netcare or equivalent) and preferably a CCSA coding course.

Required skills

• Proficiency in ICD‑10 coding and CCSA (Complete CPT® for South Africa) coding standards.
• Intermediate computer proficiency, including use of coding and health‑information systems.
